Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report early analysis show the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior representative said the incident made him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
