Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.
The American area famous for its historical past, maple syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is undergoing a rapid change. A recent study finds that New England is heating up more quickly than nearly any other place on the Earth.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The speed of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently increased significantly in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only rising, it's speeding up," stated a lead researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The research positions the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the American South," the scientist added.
Study Approach and Findings
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has heated up by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3°C in the same period.
"That is extremely rapid heating, which is alarming," commented the researcher.
Notable Warming Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are increasing more quickly than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are warming at double the speed of other seasons.
- The harsh winter chill New England is known for is being reduced.
Oceanic Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary reason for this unusual accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is directing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by wind patterns.
"The excess heat from global warming is being stored in the sea like a massive battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a recipient of that energy."
Consequences on Culture and Weather
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in the past decade, including enormous floods and extended drought.
The increasing temperatures endangers iconic aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by shifting climate conditions.
- Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or relocated repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snowfall.
"I reside just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely disappeared from much of southern New England."
