The Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Place.

On the surface, Lux may look more like a difficult university quiz rather than a new pop project from an artist who just had a previous single featured an international pop icon. Divided across 4 separate sections and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently through the lens of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched upwards here, buoyed by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within an extensive list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the work of other pop stars appear rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That Lux manages to escape overly academic posturing is nearly a miracle, and full praise belonging to the artist. While it's not her first project to fuse the past with the present, its ambitions feel much greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist at her peak, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart in two, you still desire to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit shines brightly during a stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for several moments. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment before a comically exaggerated string surge crashes down like comedic force. The track then segues to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to know—what it will go to next."

Almost each song finishes at a completely distinct place than how it began. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight symphony only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work begins out dark and brooding, featuring menacing beats, before sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves navigating the line of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that it has become her first release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spins skyward. That trick is echoed by another powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture honesty of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism for sublime elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried gems that takes time to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. Where some big releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, this record offers a sumptuous feast where the characters at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's truly restlessly creative visionary.
